Tues. Oct. 25, 2016 Vernon, Normandy France

Tues. Oct. 25, 2016 Vernon, Normandy France - standing at the plane tree that anchored the 2nd floating bridge across the Seine established on Aug. 27, 1944.

Almost 3 months after D Day, June 6, 1944; on Aug. 25, 1944, the British Nottinghamshire Sherwood Rangers Yeoman - Royal Armoured Corps, moved through Vernon to begin operations to cross the Seine.

From Aug. 25-29, 1944 the British lost over 550 men in the operation. Montgomery used the bridge to cross the Seine on Sept. 1, 1944, on his way to Belgium.

According to one guide, "Normandy is a region of northern France. Its varied coastline includes white-chalk cliffs and WWII beachheads, including Omaha Beach, site of the famous D-Day landing. Just off the coast, the rocky island of Mont-Saint-Michel is topped by a soaring Gothic abbey. The city of Rouen, dominated by Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Rouen, is where military leader and Catholic saint Joan of Arc was executed in 1431."
