ExploreCarroll.com: General election certain to bring change for Carroll County

ExploreCarroll.com: General election certain to bring change for Carroll County

Carroll County Election 2010 Candidates

[Good article for your files – delineates much of the who, what, where and when of the candidates for office in Carroll Countyhttp://www.explorecarroll.com/news/4901/carroll-county-election-2010-candidates/]

After a campaign season that seemed to begin almost after the last one ended, today's the day Maryland voters will go to the polls and select a governor and a host of local elected officials in Carroll County.

Regardless of who wins, the county will see significant change, with five new faces on the Board of County Commissioners and at least one new face in the State Senate and House in the 5th District.

The commissioners' race will carry with it the most sweeping change in local government in decades.

In addition to the expansion of the commissioner board from three seats to five, the members will all be elected by district -- not from the county overall. Plus, there will be no incumbents.

No ballots cast on election day will result in a wider impact on the day-to-day lives of county residents than votes cast for Board of County Commissioners. The next board will tackle issues including an expanded sheriff's office or a county police force, whether to build a waste-to-energy incineration plant with Frederick County, the county's land-use master plan update and more.

The $300,000 project to renovate Buell's old home is led by society chairman Don Rembert (Class of 1961), and his wife, Judy Ellis ('60), of Reston, Va.

They also, according to the website, helped lead fundraising that supported the publication of the college's history, "Fearless and Bold," by Dr. Jim Lightner ('59), a professor emeritus of mathematics and college historian.

[...]

However, while the college took root here, the seminary actually relocated in October 1958 -- to the grounds of American University, in Washington, where it is now the prestigious Wesley Theological Seminary.

Many of the fond memories I have of growing up in Westminster occurred at the Westminster Municipal Playground.

Many know the playground as home to Westminster Fallfest, Carroll County's largest community charity event.

That's appropriate — rec programs park facilities and most of the quality of life improvements in our community have been the result of efforts between citizens, the private sector and enabled by government.

[…]

The tradition of civic support lives on to this day. On April 17, I had the pleasure of attending the opening day ceremonies of the Westminster Optimist Little League.

George Washington racks-up $300k in overdue library fines

Posted 5/10/10 by Carroll Eagle By Kevin Dayhoff

British Broadcasting Corp. is reporting that archivists in New York’s oldest library have uncovered a surprising borrower with overdue books.

It has been recently revealed that on Oct. 5, 1789, our nation’s first president, George Washington, borrowed two books from what was then the only library in Manhattan, the New York Society Library.

According to BBC, on Oct. 5, 1789, a time when New York City was serving as our nation’s capital, Washington borrowed the “Law of Nations,” a dissertation on international relations, and Vol. 12 of a collection of transcripts of debate transcripts from Britain's House of Commons.

Now this in itself may not be earth-shattering news. However there is a catch. ...

SYKESVILLE — Carroll County should have its first speed cameras installed this year following the Sykesville Town Council's vote tonight (Monday) to approve a speed camera ordinance.

At its meeting at the Town House and after a second public hearing, the council voted 5-1 in favor of speed cameras. Mayor Mike Miller and council members Leslie Reed, Frank Robert Jr., Ian Shaw and Chris True voted in favor while Councilman Leo Keenan voted against. Councilman Scott Sanzone was absent.

"I'm ecstatic," Police Chief John Williams Jr., told The Eagle. "Time and time again, the number one issue in our town is speeding, speeding, speeding."

The town expects to operate three mobile speed camera units in three school areas/zones for speed cameras:

• Ava Wanas Montessori School, 7590 College Road;

• Springfield Presbyterian School/Stepping Stones Pre-School, 7300 Spout Hill Road; and

• Sykesville Middle School, 7301 Springfield Ave.
